On the occasion of the 2002 Awarding
Ceremony of the "Great Wall Friendship Award" to foreign
experts in Beijing and the New Year reception in honor of foreign
experts, the People's Government of Beijing Municipality organized
a reception in the Beijing Hotel on 11 December 2002.
Deputy Mayor Zhang Mao presented the 2002 "Great Wall Friendship

The award was established in 1999 by Beijing
to honor foreign experts who contribute remarkably to the development
of Beijing:
1999, 14 experts
2000, 12 experts
2001, 12 experts
2002, 10 experts
Mr. Zhang Mao gave a speech to thank the
experts and Mr. Peter Leupp addressed the public in the name of the other
experts.
Gilbert Van Kerckhove joined the ceremony as advisor to the Beijing Foreign
Investment Service Center and as foreign expert.
The city of Shanghai has a similar award, called "Silver Magnolia"
and "Golden Magnolia".
Gilbert Van Kerckhove received the Silver Magnolia in 1999.
