The Rt. Hon. Alderman Michael Oliver, the
Lord Mayor of London paid a visit to Beijing 20-22 October 2002 on the
invitation of Mr. Liu Qi, Mayor of Beijing.
The Lord Mayor is also the ambassador for the British financial services
industry overseas and promotes the City of London as the leading international
center. While in Beijing he met with senior officials of China's financial
institutions and business community. He was accompanied by a delegation
of senior business representatives from several leading British financial
companies who have expressed an interest in the risk management component
of the planning for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
The Lord Mayor also met with the Beijing Development Planning Commission
(BDPC) on 22 October, accompanied by senior representatives of the British
Embassy in Beijing and the China-Britain Business Council.
BDPC was represented, among others, by Mr. Shen Baochang (director), Mr.
Liu Zhi (deputy director), Mr. Liu Bo, Mr. Gilbert Van Kerckhove and Ms.
Sun Bin.
Both sides exchanged ideas on possibilities for the City of London to
join the projects for the Beijing 2008 Olympics.
BDPC agreed to send a delegation in November to join a seminar in London
on PPP, project finance, insurance and risk management. The seminar was
